At first.. i thought that it was a name for a band. But it turns out, Secondhand Serenade was more of a solo project, led by one person with the name of John Vesely. His first recording was called "Awake" which he promoted by himself trough myspace and iTunes. Online respond took him to a deal with Glassnote Record (an indie recording, a subsidiary of Warner Bros), and on February 2007, the album "Awake" was expanded and released with 12 tracks.
Album Review: "AWAKE"
When listening to this album, the first song that catches my attention is the one titled "I Hate This Song" due to the unique title and lyric. This album is acoustic. We will not find the sound of drums, bass, because from one song to another, the only dominant instrument is the guitar with piano on some songs (such as the one in Awake). But when combined with John Vesely's voice (almost similar to Christopher Carabba from Dashboard Confessional), the result is quite nice, although not yet "amazing" because it tends to be too similar to DC. I was recently listening to DC's "The Shade of Poison Trees" which was more rich in variations.
If being asked "when would be the best time to listen to this album?" then I will point out that this album is appropriate at our side during broken heart moments, when we miss someone we can't have, and we can't sleep at night.. haha.. check out the lyric of "I Hate This Song" below... and i also put two tracks on my music page with "Awake" and "I Hate This Song" .. ^_^

to be honest, gw nyoba dengerin album ini sambil bersih-bersih rumah during my last weekend... and ternyata... sangat membantu!! hehe.. due to the upbeat music in each track (kecuali yang saya ambil liriknya itu), dan sedikit vintage (inget lagunya Christina Aguilera "Ain't No Other Man"), sumpe deeeh asik banget buat goyang sambil ikutan nyanyi (sayang belom ngapalin liriknya, hehe)..
lagu jagoan dari album ini sebenernya sih yang judulnya "Tell Me 'Bout It" tapi menurut gw tu lagu biasa-biasa aja, cuman emang di lagu ini vokal nya Ms Stone itu keliatan powerful banget, teges dan seperti biasanya nge-soul gituu.. atau mungkin karena diiringi musik yang cenderung "minimalis" alias ngga terlalu banyak instrumen, jadinya vokal dia keliatan mantaaap banget..!! (kapan suara gw bisa kayak gitu ya.. *ngimpi mode = ON.. heheheehh.. yaiks..)
anyway.. menurut gw sih lagu itu masih kalah asik sama track yang judulnya "Put Your Hands On Me" and also "Music" (di lagu Music ini, Lauryn Hill ikutan nyanyi loh..), and satu lagi yang judulnya "Tell Me What We're Gonna Do Now" (eh btw, intro lagu ini ngingetin gw ama om Bob.. bukan Bob Tutupoly, tapi Bob Marley dengan no woman no cry-nya).. kayanya sich kord nya sama, trus sama-sama nyantai gitu juga.. oiya, di lagu ini featuring 'Common' (siapa tuh..? waduh gw sendiri kagak tau itu siapa, some rapper, i guess..)
kalo nungguin lagu yang nge-soul pelan alias mendayu-dayu, gw musti bersabar deh krn baru ada di track ke-11, yaitu "Bruised but Not Broken" yang gw ambil liriknya itu.. tapi abis itu kena track "Baby Baby Baby", yaaach... goyang lageee... but finally i get what i'm looking for.. track ke-13.. alias "Music (outro)" yang pertamanya gw pikir kagak ada vokalnya ternyata ada.. mantaaapp...
jadi kesimpulannya, album ini cenderung minimalis dalam instrumen, tapi tetep nunjukkin power dari vocalnya Joss Stone, dan ketukan-ketukan vintage juga lumayan kental.. (jadi inget Amy Winehouse yang juga rada-rada vintage gitu, apa emang tren lagi kembali kesono ya??)..
ngga rugi punya album ini deh.. bisa buat temen manggut-manggut.. hehe..

"saat ini sudah cukup...cukup sudah..." (sepenggal lirik dari lagu "Jangan Datang Malam Ini, salah satu lagu favorit saya di album ini)
Mulai kemaren seharian dengerin album terbarunya Padi, and well.. I guess the waiting's worthed.. krn album ini boleh dibilang salah satu album terbaik mereka. Tanpa menjadi rumit dalam musik, tapi ciri khas Padi masih kental terasa di album ini, dimana suara Fadli (yang masih tetep terkesan males-malesan, hehe), digabung dengan gebukan drum Yoyok yang berat, melodi dari Piyu yang melengking.. semuanya mantap dan jauh dari membosankan!
Dibuka dengan "Aku Bisa Menjadi Kekasih" terus terang lumayan kaget soalnya intronya reggae gitu, tapi not for long (thank God) disambut sama gitarnya Piyu, tapi tetep enak buat goyang kok.. Lagu berikutnya "Belum Terlambat" intronya agak panjang sebelum Yoyok nggebuk drum-nya and koor terdengar.. Lagu ini termasuk salah satu yang saya dengerin berkali-kali, soalnya ngga nangkep maksud lagu ini, apa cinta sesama atau cinta sama Tuhan.. still a bit confused.. :) apalagi lirik akhirnya "apakah cinta yang membahagiakanmu, sesuatu yang ingin kumiliki" ..
Lagu-lagu di album ini cukup variatif, itulah sebabnya saya tadi bilang album ini tidak membosankan, karena dari lagu satu ke lagu selanjutnya ada perbedaan tapi tetep enak. Salah satunya, abis denger Belum Terlambat trus lanjut ke Harmoni.. Harmoni agak mirip-mirip sama Sempurna'nya Andra & The Backbone, yaaahh akustik gitar gitulah.. tapi pas mau habis, lagunya jadi Padi "banget" full band.. hehe.. selanjutnya... lanjut melulu dari tadi, lo dengerin sendiri deh, asli ngga rugi kok.. **

musiknya menghentak-hentak bagaikan lantai dansa taun 60-70an, pas ndengerin album ini bayangan yang terlintas adalah lampu dansa yang muter-muter diatas kepala, suasana malam temaram di pesta kebun atau di bar pinggir pantai (asal jangan ancol ato kenjeran, hehee....)
track yang judulnya "rehab" cenderung lebih modern dan minim instrumen, tapi tetep asik untuk didengerin.. "Just Friends" kental aroma reggae, bikin pinggul bergoyang, and untuk lagu "Back to Black" ada lirik yang menggugah selera.. "you go back to her, i go back to black".. completed my fascination because she happened to wrote all the lyric herself.. great job! go girl power .. (apa seh...)
